This stimulating path of study is personally and professionally rewarding. Anthroposophically and academically robust, it supports students to develop the philosophical and theoretical basis of teaching and learning in Steiner schools. Increasingly, contemporary research links Steiner education with learning and teaching that strengthens educational wellbeing for 21st Century children. This Steiner Primary Teaching specialty is designed to equip primary educators with the knowledge, understanding, skills and dispositions they need to be effective Beginning Teachers in Steiner and in state schools.
With over 900 Steiner Waldorf schools worldwide, growth in Steiner education is expected to be considerable. This Steiner specialty degree, developed in partnership with the Federation of Rudolf Steiner (Waldorf) Schools in NZ, was endorsed by recognised academics at other New Zealand universities and Steiner teacher education specialists from within NZ and from the University of Plymouth, UK.
The specialty attracts applicants who wish to work professionally as primary and intermediate teachers in Steiner and state settings, and qualified teachers seeking to upgrade their qualifications to a specialist degree and/or specialise in Steiner primary teaching. Registered teachers may qualify to enter the final year. Graduates can build upon their Steiner teaching degree through postgraduate studies with the School of Education.
Student Teaching
For wide and varied practical experience all students will experience Student Teaching in a range of settings within schools, at least two of them (totalling 9 weeks) in Steiner settings. Students should be prepared to travel out of Auckland. Students are supported to integrate theory and practice, building self-efficacy in the arts as a basis for learning, while cultivating the development of attitudes that enhance relationships and communication. Students have opportunities to develop an art of education, to enhance their capacities to observe, plan and practise, to assess and reflect, collegially guided by their Associate Teachers.
Career Opportunities
Graduates will be able to work in a variety of settings: in Steiner Schools, in primary schools, intermediate schools, middle schools, and area schools. As Steiner education is a worldwide movement, graduates may wish to pursue teaching careers overseas. Graduates of this specialty are immediately eligible to apply for provisional teacher registration.
